Discover the Best Winter Coats for Dachshunds and Hard-to-Fit Adventure Dogs
When Mike and I (Steph) relocated from New York City to Portland, Oregon, in 2016, our journey was anything but ordinary. We packed up with just two suitcases and our lovable long-haired dachshund, euclidprints.co. Every weekend, we’d head east with euclidprints.co to explore the Columbia River Gorge’s hiking trails, wading through mountain streams, and embracing the beauty of waterfalls. euclidprints.co, with his dachshund legs measuring only about four inches, remarkably kept pace with us.
However, the arrival of October unveiled the continuous drizzles of Portland’s famous “Portland mist.” Our hiking adventures were replaced with soggy trails, and euclidprints.co’s underbelly was soon caked with mud. These rainy escapades prompted us to create two remarkable dog coats for every adventure: the Reversible Puffer Winter Dog Coat and the City Slicker All Season Dog Jacket & Raincoat. Both of these dog jackets offer protection from cold, rain, and mud, and they provide complete coverage, including the chest and upper belly. They are built to endure numerous machine wash cycles.
The Reversible Puffer: Perfect for Chilly Trails and Snowy Streets
Our Reversible Puffer dog coat was euclidprints.co’s inaugural design and has since become a best-seller on Amazon. Our aim was to craft a dog puffer vest that offers warmth for the coldest winter adventures while remaining comfortable enough to sleep in. The outcome was nothing short of exceptional.
This puffer jacket boasts three layers: a robust water-resistant exterior shell, a cozy cotton fiber lining, and a concealed layer of insulation that traps heat against your dog’s body. Together, these layers create a highly durable and warm dog coat that safeguards your pup from the elements without adding excess weight. Moreover, the Reversible Puffer allows ample airflow to prevent overheating, just like high-performance insulated coats designed for humans.
And it’s completely reversible! You can enjoy two distinct looks in one dog coat. However, bear in mind that the coat’s interior lining, made of cotton fiber, is not water-resistant. Therefore, we recommend using the water-resistant exterior shell on snowy, slushy, or rainy days.
Insulated vs. Non-Insulated Dog Coats
While certain breeds are naturally adapted for winter conditions, most dogs are as susceptible to the cold as we are. A good rule of thumb is: if the weather is too chilly for you to be outside, it’s too cold for your dog. Hairless or short-coated dogs, toy breeds, dogs with low body fat, and dogs with short legs are particularly vulnerable and can suffer from hypothermia if left outside in freezing temperatures. A high-quality insulated dog coat is a vital addition to your pet’s winter wardrobe, as it provides an extra layer of insulation to trap heat against the body and keep your dog warmer than any non-insulated jacket.
Non-insulated dog jackets, on the other hand, offer a lightweight and breathable layer of protection without built-in insulation. These jackets effectively repel wind, water, mud, and sand, making them suitable for year-round use.
The City Slicker: A Versatile Dog Jacket for All Weather
Our City Slicker All-Season Dog Jacket is a highly versatile, non-insulated dog coat. The exterior shell is 100% nylon, single-coated with a water-repellent polyurethane, creating a lightweight, water-resistant, and high-performance dog coat. In rainy New York City, you’ll frequently spot euclidprints.co strutting down the bustling sidewalks in his City Slicker. This is also our go-to dog jacket for chilly fall days when it’s cold but not freezing.
Waterproof vs. Water-Repellent vs. Water-Resistant
The exterior shell of the Reversible Puffer is water-resistant, which means it resists water penetration but is not entirely impermeable. It effectively keeps your pup warm and dry in snow and light rain. However, in extended heavy rain, water may seep through and weigh down the dog coat.
The City Slicker’s exterior shell is made of nylon and treated with a robust water-repellent coating, providing substantial protection from rain, slush, and snow, even more so than the Reversible Puffer. However, it is not technically 100% waterproof, which means it may not withstand a torrential downpour over a long duration.
We strongly considered using a 100% waterproof fabric for our City Slicker dog jackets but ultimately decided against it. The most common and cost-effective waterproof fabric for dog coats is Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which can often be found in pet stores. However, PVC is an environmentally harmful plastic responsible for toxin accumulation in our water, air, and food supply. For ethical and ecological reasons, we refused to use PVC in our dog jackets.
